The 2016 Winter Concert will be held at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall at 4191 Hardy Street in Lihue. This concert will benefit the Mokihana Music Scholarship, given each year to one or more graduating high school seniors. The date is Sunday, February 21, 2016, at 4 p.m., and the title of the concert is Magical Piano and Celtic Harp, starring Hank Curtis on piano and Sylvia Woods on Celtic harp. Tickets will be $20 presale and $25 at the door. Students will be $10
Here’s a little information about our performers for the 2016 Winter Concert. Hank Curtis, has been a piano prodigy since age 5. At age 15, he performed Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto #2 in g-minor with the San Diego Symphony. Hank is also a professional recording artist, composer, insightful teacher, and music director. Hank has original music on Polygram Records and three Windham Hill Samplers. Hank performs regularly at Kilohana, as well as at special events. He is the Musical Director at All Saints Church in Kapaa. Hank will have cd’s to autograph and sell after the Winter Concert at his Meet and Greet table.
Sylvia Woods is widely known for her first recording and original composition called The Harp of Brandiswhiere: A Suite for Celtic Harp. It’s a very mystical and beautiful piece and will be available for purchase at the concert. Sylvia’s book Teach Yourself to Play the Folk Harp has sold over 80,000 copies and is as popular today as when it first came out. Soon after publishing this book, Sylvia began touring as a solo performer in the U.S., Europe, and Canada. She has received many accolades, such as the All Ireland Harp Champion and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award this year at the Somerset Folk Harp Festival in New Jersey. In addition to being a great, Sylvia is also the owner of harpcenter.com where she sells her books and harps internationally. Sylvia’s harp playing has been heard on radio, television, and several major motion picture soundtracks. Come by Sylvia’s Meet and Greet table after the Winter Concert. She will also have CD’s to autograph and sell!
